A real strawberry doesn't taste like the candy. It's brighter, a little tart at the shoulders, sweet in the middle, with that smell that jumps out of the basket before you touch a single one. Fresa is that by the cupful, crushed fresh over ice near Lincoln Park. I drank mine while two ducks argued over territory, and honestly, better than television. The second jar runs deeper pink. Guava brings a honeyed, almost pear-like sweetness and a soft tropical bloom. Strawberry keeps it bright. Together they taste like summer stayed out past curfew.

A LITTLE HISTORY, ON THE HOUSE

On the edge of Lincoln Park sits Plaza de la Raza, the Place of the People, born in 1970 when the community stepped in to save the old lakeside boathouse and turned it into a home for Mexican-American theater, music, and art. Kids learn folklórico now where the rowboats used to sleep. If that doesn't warm you, check your pulse.
