Pacoima summers cook the Valley about ten degrees past reasonable, and this jar is the neighborhood's official rebuttal. I finished my first plastic cup before I'd finished paying for it, which the vendor found funnier than I did. The second jar plays it cooler. A LITTLE HISTORY, ON THE HOUSE
Pacoima raised Ritchie Valens, the Mexican-American teenager who took La Bamba, an old Veracruz folk song, and made it rock and roll in 1958. The neighborhood never stopped claiming him. His face still watches over Van Nuys Boulevard from the murals, and the local post office answers to his name. That hometown pride still runs deep.
