The first sip of jamaica, say ha-MY-kah, is a double take. Your eyes swear it's fruit punch, that deep jewel-box red. Your mouth gets something better, hibiscus petals steeped slow, tart as cranberry with a floral hum underneath and just enough sugar to keep the peace. It smells like a garden that learned to party. At Mariachi Plaza the plastic cup comes cold and sweating while trumpets warm up ten feet away, and I'm telling you, ruby-red juice with a live soundtrack will fix things you didn't know were broken. I stood there way past my parking meter. Worth it.
A LITTLE HISTORY, ON THE HOUSE
Mariachis have gathered on this corner since the 1930s, back when players took rooms at the Boyle Hotel and waited here for the next gig to roll up. The stone kiosko in the center was carved in Mexico and sent north, a gift from Jalisco, the birthplace of mariachi. This plaza isn't decor. It's a hiring hall with a horn section.
