Horchata is proof you can drink dessert standing up. Toasted rice steeped until it goes silky, canela, the soft Mexican cinnamon, and enough sweetness to make you close your eyes mid-sip. It smells like rice pudding that got invited somewhere better. Down at the San Pedro waterfront the harbor wind does half the chilling for you, and between the cranes and the gulls you'd swear the whole port slowed down to let you finish your plastic cup. Then you notice the second jar. It has the same pale horchata heart, only blushing pink with crushed strawberries. Two moods, one counter, no wrong answer.
A LITTLE HISTORY, ON THE HOUSE
Locals called a stretch of this waterfront Mexican Hollywood, a barrio of more than fifty families that welcomed new arrivals from Mexico from the 1920s into the 1950s. Many worked the canneries when San Pedro packed more fish than anywhere in America. The houses are gone. The name refuses to leave. Respect.
